When asked by an MC at a shoe company's party if the Warriors will make the playoffs, he replied "I don't think I'll be a Warrior next year, I'm looking to leave". The crowd was stunned.
Stephen Jackson has been with the Warriors since January 17th 2007 after being traded by the Pacers. He thrived with the new offense of Don Nelson, and help the Warriors secure a playoff spot and led them in a very memorable series against the Mavericks.
Jackson said he has notified the Warriors of his wishes and given a list of teams to be traded to. He would like to go to Cleveland (who wouldn't?) any team in Dallas, or the New York Knicks.
It's unlikely that New York will take his near 8 million dollar salary, as they prepare for the off-season of 2009-2010, where LeBron James, Chris Bosh, and Dwayne Wade will be free agents.
Cleveland may not have room, because they have a very full roster as they were very productive this off-season. They lost in the playoffs because of lack of bench-depth, so GM Danny Ferry realized that and signed players like Anthony Parker to change that problem.
Dallas Mavericks were actually rumoured to be in trade talks for Stephen Jackson. That would be a great team, likely the No. 3 seed in the West. Their line-up would look like this.
C - Erick Dampier
PF - Dirk Nowitzki
SF - Shawn Marion
SG - Stephen Jackson
PG - Jason Kidd
That's a very strong line-up, but also old. Their stamina and ability to stay healthy is their biggest opponent.
The reports of trade talks do not give who the Mavericks are going to give, but I would imagine that Josh Howard would be one of the players. Stephen Jackson could replace him and is a great upgrade at the shooting guard.
Mark Cuban, owner of the Mavs, would be willing to do this deal in order to win. Cuban is one of the most dedicated and involved owners in the NBA.
